    204-pin SODIMM for Mac

In short, 204-pin small outline dual inline memory modules (SODIMMs) are the form factor used to provide DDR3 memory modules for notebook computers and other small form factor computing platforms.

To use DDR3 memory, your system must have both a 204-pin SODIMM slot and a chipset that supports DDR3 memory. A DDR3 SODIMM will not fit into DDR2 or DDR memory sockets.

SODIMMs are smaller and thinner than regular DIMMs, and the 204-pin SODIMM PCBs are always ~2.6 inches long and are usually around 1.18 inches high (though the heights can vary slightly). They consist of a number of memory components (usually black) that are attached to a printed circuit board (usually green). The number of memory components on a 204-pin SODIMM's printed circuit board (PCB) can vary, but the PCB will always have 102 pins on the front and the back both, for a total of 204 pins. The gold pins on the bottom of the SODIMM provide the connection between the memory module and the memory socket.

My 27" late 2009 iMac (running OS X 10.7.5) was already a fairly powerful computer, as it came with an Intel core i7 CPU, and I had previously upgraded the RAM from 8Gb to 12Gb. However, I decided to upgrade to a full 16Gb and get the best from my iMac as possible.

With a full 16Gb fitted (very easy to do), the iMac boots up much faster, and memory hungry applications load almost instantaneously. Final Cut Express (with it's various plug-ins) used to take some time to load. Now, it opens and is ready for editing with almost as soon as I've finished double clicking the mouse. Other memory hungry applications, such as Photoshop, Illustrator, etc open much more quickly, and I can have multiple large files open without any slowdown.

If you enjoy playing videogames through Windows via Bootcamp, performance is boosted significantly with the extra ram. Using Windows through virtualisation software like Parallels is also faster, as it benefits from the extra memory, which you can allocate between Windows and Mac OS X on the fly - enabling Windows to still feel responsive, even when running as a virtual computer.

Even everyday tasks in OS X feel faster. If you want to get the most out of a fairly closed system like an iMac, then maximising the amount of RAM available is the single best upgrade you can make (although, over I've also upgraded the hdd, and replaced the internal DVD Superdrive with a Blu-Ray Superdrive on my iMac).

I always use Crucial Memory RAM modules on all my computers, and have done for many years. They've never let me down in terms of performance or build quality.

Unfortunately I happen to have received a faulty piece of RAM. I wanted to speed up my computer but by doing this is did the complete opposite. I had to keep restarting the computer as it was apparently causing it to panic and therefore seized working. I have been able to survive because it was only happened twice but after that I put the original RAM back on the computer an everything has gone back t normal (fingers crossed)

Used this ram to speed up a dying MacBook pro following a software upgrade - couldn't do anything on the machine without the spinning circle.

10 minutes and 2 sticks of ram later it's running like a new machine - really please!
